Arsenal vs Sunderland – The Game That Stopped The Winning Streak

The Premier League Match Between Arsenal and Sunderland

On Saturday 8th November 2025, Arsenal arrived at the Stadium of Light, hoping to extend their winning run to 11 consecutive games. Arsenal had won their past 10 games across all competitions and were beginning to look like an unstoppable force. However, the match between Arsenal and Sunderland ended with a 2 – 2 draw, breaking the winning streak that Arsenal had.

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta after the game said, “Yeah, obviously the last feeling is disappointment and frustration because we wanted the three points. We had to navigate through a really tough game, we knew that. It was very disruptive; we have to deal with situations that are difficult to deal with.” There was a deep sense of disappointment and perhaps regret over how certain situations on the pitch were dealt with.

The Advertising Hoardings

Sunderland used different tactics to prevent or stop Arsenal from winning the game, however, one creative way that was used by Sunderland was to move the advertising hoardings closer to the pitch.

Arsenal had been playing really well throughout the season and could be said to have been playing with more ‘directness’. Part of the threat that Arsenal posed were their long throws. A long throw in football is a tactical play in which a ball is intentionally thrown with great distance and power, to send the ball into the opposition’s penalty box from a throw-in on the wing.

Sunderland brought the advertising hoardings closer to the pitch to limit the distance Arsenal could get with long throws. When asked about the advertising hoardings move, Sunderland boss Le Bris said, “yeah we tried to find the details to win the game and they are really strong on set pieces. We were good as well. It was something obvious that this threat was really important for this game and in the end it was balanced.”

This was an intentional and creative way for Sunderland to prevent Arsenal from winning the 11th match in a row.

What Christians Can Learn From This

What Sunderland did was to make note of anything that could make Arsenal win the game and effectively put measures to prevent this. Christians should be just as vigilant, if not more, when it comes to the tactics that the enemy uses to fight Christians.

1 Peter 5:8 (NKJV) “Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil walks about like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour.”

2 Corinthians 2:11 (NKJV) “lest Satan should take advantage of us; for we are not ignorant of his devices.”

Look at your own life, observe the different loopholes or avenues the enemy could potentially use to “score a goal” against you, and do what is necessary to prevent this. Whether that means separating from certain relationships or disengaging with particular social media content. Do whatever it takes, move the advertising hoardings.
