Christian Spoken Word Scene
What spoken word is and how to get involved
What is spoken word?
Spoken word can be described as performance based poetry that brings poetry to life through vocal delivery with an emphasis on sound, rhythm, pace, volume, emotion and audience connection.
Spoken word, as opposed to written poetry, takes into account that this is poetry that is supposed to be heard. This means that there is a great story-telling element in which a particular message, thought or idea is effectively communicated to the listener, not just by the words used but how those words are expressed.
Spoken word can encompass elements of music, singing, theatre, acting, dancing and other art forms to help convey the messaging of a piece.
The history of spoken word
Spoken word is said to have existed from the time language itself existed. The modern day presentation of spoken word is believed to be a continuation of ancient oral tradition or culture.
Oral tradition or oral lore allowed knowledge, ideas, beliefs, art and culture to be preserved through the oral transmission from one generation to another.
It can therefore be deduced that before there was written poetry, there was first spoken word poetry.
How can spoken word be used to glorify God?
The bible makes it clear that everything should be done to bring glory to God.
1 Corinthians 10:31 (NKJV) “Therefore, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God.”
This means that not only is there room for spoken word to glorify God, it is expected from believing spoken word artists/poets. The bible also emphasises the power behind spoken words and what is expected of a Christian when they speak.
Proverbs 18:21 (MSG) “Words kill, words give life; they’re either poison or fruit—you choose.”
Colossians 4:6 (NKJV) “Let your speech always be with grace, seasoned with salt, that you may know how you ought to answer each one.”
Ephesians 4:29 (NKJV) “Let no corrupt word proceed out of your mouth, but what is good for necessary edification, that it may impart grace to the hearers.”
According to scripture, the words that are spoken by a person have the ability to bring life or death. Believers are expected and even instructed to be mindful of the words that they speak.
As it pertains to spoken word, this means being led by the spirit of God in the pieces that are created. Be prayerful, allow the Lord to bring direction and inspiration in the spoken word pieces that are created, as well as, how they should be delivered. Additionally, it is essential that any spoken word piece that is created is aligned with the word of God.
